Ardies, Dy Beat No. 3 Doubles Team In Michigan

Jan. 18, 2010

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Husky women's tennis team finished up its season-opening stint at the Michigan Invitational today and enjoyed its best success in doubles, taking two of three from 7th-ranked Miami. Senior Joyce Ardies saw her first action of the weekend, teaming up with Denise Dy to upset Miami's third-ranked doubles duo.

In their first match of the weekend, Ardies and Dy, the 11th-ranked doubles team in the country, made a quick mark with an 8-2 victory over Miami's Laura Vallverdu and Gabriela Mejia. Ardies and Dy are now 8-2 together this fall and 20-4 dating back to last season with wins over three Top-10 teams.

Elsewhere today, junior Venise Chan came up just short in her attempt for a perfect weekend and a second win over a Top-10 opponent in as many days. Chan took on 6th-ranked Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee, and took the first set, 6-4, before Whoriskey fought back to take the second, 6-3. Chan might have felt the effects of her Sunday singles match which she won in a third-set tiebreak, because she faded in the last set with Whoriskey prevailing, 6-1.

Senior Aleksandra Malovic had her best day of the weekend, getting a solid singles win over the Volunteers' Katie Lee, 6-2, 6-2. Malovic and junior Lina Xu also teamed up in doubles to defeat Mills and Wasilewski of Miami, 9-8 and 7-1 in the tiebreak.

In the cumulative point standings, Chan tied for second with 16 points, as Miami's Anna Bartenstein racked up 19 points going 3-0, winning twice at No. 3 singles and once at No. 2. Dy finished in a tie for third with 14, as she did not compete in singles today.
