Main Wins Silicon Valley Amateur
Jan. 18, 2010
UCLA sophomore Gregor Main won the 2010 Silicon Valley Amateur at Coyote Creek GC in Morgan Hill on Jan. 17 after sharing the title a year ago.
In 2009, Main tied with John Murphy after the sudden-victory playoff was called due to darkness. This year, Main won on the first extra playoff hole after tying with Cal's Michael Weaver at four-under par 140.
Main posted a sterling 66 (-6) on the Valley Course in the first round and held a one-shot lead entering the second and final round. In cold and rainy weather, he posted a 74. Weaver recorded an even par 72 in the final round and the playoff ensued.
On the first extra hole -- the 18th on the Tournament Course -- Weaver lost his tee shot left. Main still had to deal with a second shot that found the cart path, leaving him with a precarious pitch shot with water in play. Main nailed the shot and got up and down to seal his victory.
