Stanford's Janiga Named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD senior Carly Janiga and UCLA sophomore Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs merited Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors, respectively for Jan. 11-17, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Janiga, a senior from Paradise Valley, Ariz., captured the all-around with a 39.325 as the 12th-ranked Cardinal defeated ARIZONA, 196.025-194.675, to win its 2010 home opener. Janiga, a six-time All-American and defending Pac-10 all-around champion, added a floor exercise victory, scoring a 9.875. She also averaged a meet-high 9.83 for her four events. Against the Wildcats, Janiga finished second on the vault with a score of 9.85 and second on the uneven bars, scoring 9.85. She has won the all-around in each of the first two meets of the season.
This is the fourth-career weekly honor for Janiga and Stanford’s 15th all-time Gymnast of the Week selection.
Hopfner-Hibbs, of Toronto, Ontario, scored a 9.9 on the floor exercise to take top honors as the top-ranked Bruins defeated then-No. 19 WASHINGTON, 196.125-194.875. With a solid performance on the floor, the reigning Pac-10 Freshman of the Year helped UCLA record its second-straight 196+ score of the season. Hopfner-Hibbs is tied for first in the nation on floor with an average of 9.912.
This is the first-career Special Performance honor for Hopfner-Hibbs and UCLA’s seventh all-time Special Performance selection.
