Freshman Rodriguez Wins Philippines Ladies Open

Jan. 20, 2010

USC freshman Cyna Rodriguez used a strong final round 5-under 67 to overtake the field and capture the Philippine Ladies Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Manila Southwoods over the weekend.

'It was a nice feeling to win here,' said the 18-year-old Rodriguez, member of the ICTSI golf squad who let out a yell as she raised her arms in triumph before a big gallery that ringed the 18th green, including five-time Open champion and two-time LPGA winner Jennifer Rosales. She finished the 54-hole event at 6-under 210, which included a pair of eagle-aided rounds of 72 and 70.

'I didn't putt well in the first two rounds, so I told myself to refrain from making three putts,' said Rodriguez, thrilled over her feat that put her in the elite circle of winners in the country's premier ladies amateur championship organized by the Women's Golf Association of the Phils. 'This win is different from my other victories because I won it at home.'
