Women's Tennis Set to Host Cal Winter Invitational

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team will host Cal Poly, Fresno State and Saint Mary's College in the annual Cal Winter Invitational this Friday-Sunday (Jan. 22-24) at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The round-robin style tournament will begin with singles matches each day at 10 a.m. PT with doubles matches beginning not before 2 p.m. PT. Admission is free. The No. 3-ranked Golden Bears (1-0) won their first dual match against Hawaii on Jan. 14, but will now turn their attention to individual play.

Cal's lineup boasts three ranked singles players including No. 2-ranked sophomore Jana Juricova. Junior Marina Cossou holds the No. 10 ranking and junior Mari Andersson is ranked No. 83. The Bears do not have a ranked doubles team.

The Bears welcome some top west-coast talent to Berkeley with Fresno State senior Anastasia Petukhova topping all players with the No. 4 ITA singles ranking. Cal Poly senior Suzie Matzenauer is ranked No. 98 in singles and holds the No. 42 ranking as a doubles team with junior Amy Markhoff. Mustang seniors Steffi Wong and Brittany Blalock are ranked No. 56 in doubles.

Cal will resume dual play as it hosts the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Jan. 29-30, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears face Utah in a 10 a.m. match on Jan. 29 with Colorado and Sacramento State set to play in a 2 p.m. match later that afternoon. The winners will play in a 2 p.m. match on Jan. 30 for the right to advance to the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. from Feb. 12-15.
