Arizona Knocks Off Cardinal Men
Jan. 22, 2010
STANFORD, Calif.-- Midway through the battle of two NCAA powerhouses, No. 3-ranked Arizona (5-0, 1-0 Pac-10) won three straight events and pulled away for the 174-124 victory at No. 2-ranked Stanford (3-1, 0-1 Pac-10) on Friday.
Arizona's hand began to turn during the 10th event, when Cory Chitwood won the 200 backstroke to give Arizona the lead at 85-84. The Wildcats extended the lead further with back-to-back wins by Clark Curckle (200 breaststroke) and Jean Basson (500 free) as well as the first of two victories by Ben Grado in the one and three-meter diving events.
That lead, at 125-100, was never relinquished as the Cardinal suffered their first dual loss since January 26, 2008, a span of 14 matches.
The Cardinal had an early lead through the first four events, leading 42-32 paced by a 200-yard medley win, and individual victories by Chad La Tourette in the 1000 and Godsoe in the 100 backstroke. During the seventh and ninth events, the Cardinal held its lead at 66-65 and 78-72 paced by wins by Coville in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
The Cardinal host Arizona State on Saturday in a doubleheader with the women's team beginning at 11 a.m. The men swim at 1 p.m.
