Beavers Remain Unbeaten with Win Over Huskies
Jan. 22, 2010
The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked No. 5 in the nation, extended its unbeaten start to the season to three meets and the Beavers defeated the No. 20 Washington Huskies 195.700-192.800 in the Beavers' Pac-10 opener Friday night at legendary Gill Coliseum. OSU (5-0) swept the individual awards with Makayla Stambaugh collecting four individual titles including scoring a 39.500 in the all-around.
The Beavers got out to a fast start set a season-high of 49.250 on the vault in the opening rotation. All five vault scores were season-highs for each gymnast including career-highs by Leilani Alferos (9.70) and Makayla Stambaugh (9.875) while Becky Colvin (9.90) and Mandi Rodriguez (9.95) tied their career-best scores respectively. Stephanie McGregor tied her season-high with a 9.825.
Oregon State held a comfortable lead of more than a point and a half after the first rotation but suffered through a pair of missed routines on the uneven bars. The Beavers' four middle routines were solid with three scores of 9.80 or better including matching 9.8's by Jen Kesler and Laura-Ann Chong and career-high tying 9.85 for Stambaugh.
OSU's struggles continued in the third rotation on the balance beam with checks and wobbles. Olivia Vivian led off the rotation with a career-high 9.75, fellow Australian Melanie Jones followed a missed routine for the Beavers.
'I told the team that they're better than this on the beam,' head coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'We have to do more than just stay on the beam. We'll get back into the gym next week and make some corrections. We have the talent for this to be a very strong event for us. Leslie (Mak) did a nice job especially considering we just choreographed this routine on Thursday. Once she's had a chance to get accustomed to it and to do some visualization she'll be more comfortable too.'
Heading to the final rotation Chaplin challenged her team to finish strong and the Beavers obliged. McGregor led off the lineup with her best routine of the season and a score of 9.75. Vivian followed with her heavy metal routine and a career-best 9.80. Then Colvin and Chong each raised their career-highs for the third straight week with scores of 9.825 and 9.85 respectively. Stambaugh added a 9.90 and Rodriguez finished the meet with a 9.875.
The Beavers remain in Corvallis next week to host the fifth annual Pink Out against No. 8 Stanford and Seattle Pacific, Friday, Jan. 29. The Pink Out begins at 7 p.m. with doors open at 6 p.m. Season and individual meet tickets can be purchased online, by calling 1-800-GO-BEAVS or in person at the OSU Ticket Office located in room 107 of Gill Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to support the cause by purchasing an official Pink Out t-shirt from Beaver Authentics at its location in Gill Coliseum. All fans that purchase the official t-shirt and wear it to the meet will receive one free general admission ticket to the event. The Pink Out has annually brought some of the largest crowds in recent seasons as the Beavers, along with The Corvallis Clinic, help to raise money and awareness for breast and cervical cancer.
Notes: Sophomore Leslie Mak, a 2009 Pac-10 co-champion on the uneven bars, was back in the balance beam lineup less than a week after spraining her left elbow during warm-ups at Ohio State last Saturday. Mak didn't practice on the beam until Thursday when she re-choreographed her routine so that she wouldn't need to put her hands down on the beam - she scored 9.70. Head coach Tanya Chaplin told the media following the meet that the team is hopeful that Mak will return to a more regular routine in the next couple weeks.
