Tonight's Wrestling Dual Between ASU and Nebraska Cancelled

Jan. 22, 2010

TEMPE - The wrestling dual scheduled for tonight (Friday, January 22) at 8 p.m. between Arizona State University and the University of Nebraska has been cancelled, Head Coach Shawn Charles announced this morning. NU was unable to travel to Tempe as its flight from Omaha to Phoenix was canceled due to the massive winter storm that hit the state of Arizona Thursday.

“We were looking forward to this dual and competing with the University of Nebraska, but the storm prevented them from being able to travel,” Charles said. “Although we will not face Nebraska, my staff is currently working to find a team that we can wrestle tonight. While we are working to set up a dual for tonight, I wanted to let our fans and the wrestling community know that we will still be on our home mats tonight at 8 p.m. and we will let everyone know who we will wrestle as soon as we get things set.”

Former Sun Devil All-Americans and UFC fighters Cain Velasquez, Ryan Bader, CB Dollaway and Aaron Simpson also will still make an appearance at the competition tonight and will be available to sign autographs as well. All alumni in attendance also will be recognized halfway through the competition.

The winter storm that hammered Southern California with rain, flooding and mud slides throughout the week turned its attention to Arizona over the past two days with the brunt of the storm hitting the Valley of the Sun Thursday. Torrential downpours -- the worst the Valley has seen in January since 1993 -- were accompanied by flooding throughout the area and a tornado warning as well. Sky Harbor Airport cancelled flights, both incoming and outgoing, as more than one inch of rain fell in a 24-hour period.

Check out the wrestling page at later today for updates on who the Sun Devils will face and any other news pertaining to tonight’s event.
