No. 1 USC Men Start 2010 Campaign With Wins

Jan. 23, 2010

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The top-ranked USC men's tennis team got the ball rolling on its 2010 dual-match season with a pair of decisive wins on the Trojans' home court. The defending national champs set up camp at Marks Stadium for their first dual matches of the year, hosting LMU and UC Santa Barbara for nonconference action. The rains stayed away long enough for USC to post a pair of wins to hold a 2-0 start to the season.

USC opened things with a 7-0 sweep of LMU, falling only in one doubles match while amassing straight-set wins down the line in singles play. Against UC Santa Barbara, USC swept up in doubles and got singles wins at the Nos. 1-3 slots to tack up a 4-3 victory over the Gauchos.

USC's top guns in doubles, Robert Farah and Steve Johnson, teamed up victoriously in both matches at the No. 1 doubles slot to help anchor the doubles point against both LMU and UC Santa Barbara. USC newcomer Peter Lucassen also had a successful day out in his first action as a Trojan, winning at No. 3 doubles with Daniel Nguyen against the Lions and with Jaak Poldma against the Gauchos. He snagged a pair of straight-set singles wins as well, topping LMU's Malet 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot and UCSB's Hohenstein 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Sophomore Nguyen had a similarly powerful day for the Trojans, also getting another doubles win alongside Jason McNaughton at No. 2 vs. UC Santa Barbara, and pinning up a 6-2, 6-1 win over UC Santa Barbara's Forget at No. 3.

Trojan Jaak Poldma was the one player to face a ranked opponent, as the No. 116 Poldma took down LMU's No. 87 Ivan Lopez 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position. And the nation's top-ranked singles player, USC's own Steve Johnson stepped into the No. 1 slot for the match vs. UCSB and grabbed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gaucho Konigsfeldt to go along with his pair of doubles wins with Farah. No. 14 Farah also posted a singles win at No. 1, beating LMU's Sauer 6-2, 6-1 in the Trojans' first match of the day. Complete match scores are below.
