Final Stats

SEATTLE - The Huskies came up just short in a bruising battle at Bank of America Arena on Saturday, as visiting UCLA outmuscled the Washington women's basketball team to win 69-65.

Senior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb led the Huskies with 16 points, while senior Laura McClellan had 14. But the Bruins' tandem of Jasmine Dixon and Doreen Campbell, who scored 25 and 21 points, respectively, proved too much of a hurdle for the Huskies. It was the first time this season a team has had two players score 20 or more points against Washington. The Huskies also had three players in double-figures, with Christina Rozier adding 11 points.

'I just feel like we weren't all dialed in for a good duration of the game,' head coach Tia Jackson said. 'That's extremely disappointing, but just to say about the character of this team, we're going to battle all the way to the end. No one can just get out of their seats and leave. We're going to battle to the end and keep every game interesting.'

The Huskies are now 8-10 overall and 3-5 in the Pac-10 Conference. UCLA is 12-6 and 5-2 in league play.

Like in Thursday night's loss to USC by the same 69-65 margin, the Huskies held a lead at halftime - this time, 30-28. But in similar fashion, they struggled to come up with big stops down the stretch as UCLA was able to get on a roll and built an insurmountable lead in the final minutes.

Nevertheless, the team was able to take pride in hanging with the Bruins until the final buzzer.

'Every loss we've had has been a close loss like this,' McClellan said. 'It shows that we can compete with anybody, even when we only play half a game of hard focused basketball. We know that as soon as we can put a full game together we can play with anything and the outcomes of these games will be different.'

The loss is UW's fourth straight, but the Huskies won't need any extra motivation heading into their next contest Friday in Pullman, Wash., where they'll take on rival Washington State. UW has won 28 straight against the Cougars.
