BERKELEY – The No. 3 Arizona men’s swimming and diving team topped No. 4 California today in a dual meet, 157-141, in Berkeley, Calif.  The win now improves the Cats’ record to 6-0.

Jean Basson got things started today for the Wildcats by taking the 1000 freestyle event with a time of 9:13.29.  The South African co-captain pummeled his Golden Bear competition in the race, winning by over 15 seconds.

Then in the 200 butterfly, A.J. Tipton and Jordan Slaughter finished 1-2 for Arizona with times of 1:46.54 and 1:49.15.

Ben Grado, who won both diving events yesterday against Stanford, again swept the one-meter and three-meter events to give the Wildcats a boost in points.  Grado scored 340.20 in the one-meter and 369.20 in the three-meter. 

In the 200 backstroke, UA finished 1-2-3 as Cory Chitwood won with a time of 1:44.74.  Chitwood was followed by Jake Tapp and Bryan O’Connor who were second and third, respectively.

In the 500 free, Basson again showcased his prowess as he won the event with a time of 4:25.06.  Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or was second with a time of 4:29.84.

In the 100 butterfly, the Wildcats again overmatched the Bears and finished with the top three spots.  This time it was Slaughter leading the charge with a time of 48.77 followed by Tipton and O’Connor in second and third.

To cap off individual events, Jack Brown won the 400 I.M. with a time of 3:52.52.  He was followed by teammates Chitwood in second at 3:53.84 and Austen Thompson in third at 3:54.89.

In the final relay, the UA 200 free relay team of Jordan Smith, Adam Small, Rob Iddiols and Shapira Bar-Or bested the Cal team in 1:19.21 for the final win of the afternoon.

Next week Arizona will host No. 1 Texas in a two-day dual meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center over Jan. 29-30.  Friday, Jan. 29, will also mark Senior Day with events beginning at 2 p.m.
