Alexis Gray-Lawson Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Jan. 25, 2010
California Golden Bear senior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson was selected Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 18-24, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Alexis Gray-Lawson (Oakland, Calif.) had a memorable week leading the Golden Bears to a pair of road victories at Oregon and Oregon State, averaging 33 points per game while shooting 41.7 percent from the floor and from three-point range. Gray-Lawson's most impressive performance came in the 79-75 double overtime win over the Beavers where she accounted for nearly 60 percent of the teams points, netting a Cal single-game record 47, also the second-most scored in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season and the third-most scored by a Pac-10 player all-time. She is only the ninth player in the country to score 40+ points in 2009-10.
In addition, Gray-Lawson set other records in the historic performance. Of the 47 points she scored, 17 were from the free throw line, attempting 20, tying program records in both categories. Playing in all 50 minutes, she also tied the team record with 31 field goal attempts, netting 13 for a 41.9 percent shooting performance. Gray-Lawson scored all eight of Cal's points in the first overtime and tallied six of the 11 in the second overtime.
The Bears opened the weekend with a 72-62 win at Oregon where Gray-Lawson scored a game-high 19 points in a low-scoring affair. She scored 13 points in the second half and hit all four free throw attempts in the game.
Gray-Lawson is averaging 17.8 points per game to tie for third in the Pac-10. The two wins over the weekend put the Bears over .500 in the Conference standings for the first time this season and into a tie for fourth.
It is Gray-Lawson's second-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, earning her first recognition just over a year ago on Jan. 19, 2009. It is California's 35th all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week selection and the first this year.
Cal hosts the Arizona schools this weekend to close out the first half of Pac-10 play. The Golden Bears host Arizona on Thursday, Jan. 28 before taking on Arizona State on Jan. 30 on Fox Sports Net.
