Jan. 26, 2010

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Arizona State Sun Devil Baseball will be naming an All-Decade Team for the 2000's. The 25-man roster is made up of players who played at least two seasons at Arizona State and who played in the past decade.

Dustin Pedroia, INFIELD, 2002-2004
He came to Arizona State as a lightly regarded, too-small for the big time middle infielder. He left as one of the most successful and decorated players in Arizona State baseball history. Dustin Pedroia ended his Sun Devil career with a .384 batting average, including the 2003 season that saw him hit .404 with 120 hits and 34 doubles, a school record. He totaled 298 hits in his career, starting all 185 games. A two-time First Team All-American, Pedroia also was a First Team Freshman All-American and a three-time First Team All-Pac-10 choice. In 2003, he was the Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year, the same year he was named the National Defensive Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. He would repeat in 2004, a year that he was also named a Golden Spikes Award finalist. Pedroia was named the On Deck Circle Club Most Valuable Player an unprecedented three straight times. He was a second round selection of the Boston Red Sox following the 2004 season and he made his big league debut in 2006. He would become an immediate contributor to the Red Sox, winning American League Rookie of the Year honors in 2007 and winning a World Series ring. He followed that with the 2008 American League Most Valuable Player Award. He has also started for the American League at second base in the past two All Star Games.

From 2000 to 2009, Arizona State baseball won 433 games, 157 Pac-10 games, appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each year and reached the College World Series three times. The Sun Devils won four Pac-10 titles, including the last three, finished in the Top 5 in the nation three times and saw 47 players earn First Team All-Pac-10 honors. Over the past 10 years, ASU has had six Pac-10 Players of the Year, two Pac-10 Pitchers of the Year, two Pac-10 Newcomers of the Year, a Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, three Academic All-Americans, 33 All-Americans and a National Player of the Year. Since 2000, 78 Sun Devils have been selected in the MLB Draft.
