Freshman Hannah James, who just came to Tempe in early January, had quite the opening dual weekend. James swept both of her singles opponents in straight sets, going 6-4, 6-3 against UCSB's Asagi Onaga and 6-3, 6-1 against UC Davis' Harzyl Legaspi. In both matches, she was the second one off the court. She also teamed up with All-American Kelcy McKenna in doubles and blanked UC Davis' No. 1 team.
While the Sun Devils will be all the way across the country, there will be some ASU fans in the stands. Sophomore Sianna Simmons will return to her hometown of Atlanta this weekend, where her parents still live. She had a successful weekend and clinched the match for the Sun Devils against UC Davis.
Two seniors lead the Sun Devils squad this season. Nadia Abdala sat out for much of the fall with an injury, but is ready to go for the spring. Last season, she earned Pac-10 All-Conference honors for the third time and reached the second round of the NCAA Championships. Amanda Martin went 1-1 over the weekend in which she clinched the Sun Devils match against UCSB.
Head coach Sheila McInerney was recently honored by the YWCA in their Tribute to Women campaign. The 26th year head coach has been selected as the Sports Leader honoree. As the head coach of the Sun Devils, McInerney boasts a 375-238 record and has taken her Sun Devils to 18 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances.
The team heads up to Berkeley, Calif., to take on California. This match will not count in the Pac-10 standings.
