Dy And Ardies Excel But No. 18 Arkansas Gets The Win
Jan. 29, 2010
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Despite the best efforts of sophomore Denise Dy and senior Joyce Ardies, the 23rd-ranked Washington women's tennis team (2-1) fell on the road today at 18th-ranked Arkansas, 5-2. Ardies and Dy won their No. 1 doubles match and each scored wins in singles.
Today's match was part of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships qualifying rounds. In the other half of the foursome, 19th-ranked Michigan defeated No. 16 South Carolina, 4-3. That sets up a Washington-South Carolina match for Saturday at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Already it's a rematch for the two from their 2009 NCAA Round of 16 match which the Gamecocks won, 4-0.
Washington struggled at second and third doubles to fall into a 1-0 hole. Arkansas took both matches, 8-2, to clinch the point. But Ardies and Dy gave the Huskies some momentum heading into singles play, as the 11th-ranked doubles duo scored an 8-6 in over Anouk Tigu and Claudine Paulson.
Dy, the nation's third-ranked singles player, blitzed Stephanie Roy at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-1, 6-1, to get Washington even. The San Jose, Calif. native is now 15-2 on the year. But Arkansas retook the lead when Paulson topped senior Aleksandra Malovic, 6-2, 7-6 at sixth singles.
Ardies leveled the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 4 singles. She took the first set, 6-4, from Emily Carbone, then after Carbone took the second set, Ardies found another gear and blanked her opponent in the third, 6-0.
Arkansas then pushed to the finish with three straight wins in third sets. At No. 3 singles, Husky junior Lina Xu recovered from an 0-6 first set loss to take her opponent to a third frame, but Kate Lukomskaya eventually won out, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-4. The Razorbacks clinched at No. 5, where Kelsey Sundaram rallied to top sophomore Samantha Smith, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1.
With the match already decided, Venise Chan was unable to pull through in a lengthy three setter in the top singles match. The 11th-ranked junior fell, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to Tigu.
