Huskies Stopped For First Time At No. 15 Illinois

Jan. 30, 2010

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - 15th-ranked Illinois playing on its home courts was too much for the 26th-ranked Washington men's tennis team to overcome today, and the Fighting Illini pulled away late to end UW's five-match win streak. The Huskies (5-1) nearly pulled out the doubles point which could have drastically shifted momentum, but it was Illinois that got the early lead and three wins in third sets to take the match 7-0.

The win sends Illinois on to the final site of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month in Virginia. The Huskies will look to resume their winning ways at home against Mississippi State next Friday, Feb. 5, in the Great Northwest Shootout opener.

Illinois won a tightly contested doubles point to put UW in an early hole. Juniors Brad Bator and Tobi Obenaus fell, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles to Abe Souza and Connor Roth. The point was then clinched at the No. 1 spot, where Johnny Hamui and Dennis Nevolo held off Martin Kildahl and Derek Drabble, 8-6. Washington was leading the No. 2 doubles match, 7-6, at the time the point was decided, so Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan didn't get the chance to close out the win.

In singles play, Illinois took a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Marek Czerwinski dealt Drabble a 6-0, 6-3 setback, and Souza topped Kildahl in straight sets as well. The match was clinched at No. 1 singles, where Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was unable to rally past 43rd-ranked Dennis Nevolo, falling 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Kyle McMorrow suffered his first dual match loss at No. 2 singles but it didn't come without a major fight. He lost the first set in a tiebreaker to Hamui before pulling out a 7-5 win in the second set. With the match already clinched, the two played a third-set super-tiebreak and Hamui came out ahead.

Obenaus won his first set against Stephen Hoh, 6-2, at fifth singles, but couldn't shut the door and Hoh fought back for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. In the No. 6 singles match, Bator saw his nine-match win streak end as Roth outlasted him 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
