Krug, Stellar Top Divers at Columbus Prelims

COLUMBUS, Ohio-- Stanford sent four affiliated divers into the main draw of the U.S. Winter Diving National Championships paced by alum, Cassidy Krug's first place win in the three-meter and Carmen Stellar's third place showing in the same event.
Of the 42 women looking to qualify for the 14 spots in the three-meter, Dr. Rick Schavone had four of his divers finish in the top-15, with three qualifying, Krug, Stellar and recruit Stephanie Phipps. Brent Eichenseer also qualified in the one-meter.
Krug won the three-meter with 343.80 points, distancing herself from second place Katie Sirounis of Florida State (262.55) and Stellar, a current senior for Stanford (261.95). Incoming recruit, Stephanie Phipps from Santa Clara, finished 11th with a tally of 241.30, while current senior, Meg Hostage, missed the final spot by 3.65 points, finishing with 235.65 points for 15th place.
Krug opened up the preliminaries with a score of 72.00, tallying three 8.0's with an inward 2/12 somersault pike, before tallying two 8.5's with a back 2 1/2 somersault pike for 70.50 points, before closing out the event with a 78.00, thanks to two 9.0's and three 8.5's with her forward 2 1/2 somersault with a twist.
Stellar's first dive registered at 58.05, her best score of the day, with two 7.5's on an inward 2 1/2 somersault and tuck. She followed that up with 54.60 points on a forward 3 1/2 somersault and tuck.
In the one-meter preliminaries, Eichenseer moved onto the main competition following a seventh place showing with a score of 329.05. His best score came on his fourth dive, a reverse 2 1/2 somersault and tuck, when he scored 64.50 points.
On Tuesday, Hostage and Phipps will be in the preliminary one-meters, while Stellar will compete in the platform. Eichenseer is already qualified in the three-meter, while Krug is pre-qualified in the synchro three-meter.
The the quarterfinals, semifinal and finals will run from February 4-8 on the campus of Ohio State.
