Cardinal Baseball Picked Fourth

STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford Baseball, ranked as high as No. 25 nationally in the preseason, was picked to finish fourth in the preseason Pacific 10 Conference coaches poll. The Cardinal received 59 points, behind three-time defending champion, Arizona State (78 points and 7 first place votes), Oregon State (67, 2) and UCLA.

The Cardinal return five starters and two-thirds of its weekend rotation from a team that finished 30-25 last year and missed the NCAA Regionals.

The rest of the Pac-10 preseason picks are: Arizona (fifth), Washington State, Cal, USC, Washington and Oregon.

The middle of the diamond returns for Stanford in: Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Jake Schlander at shortstop and second baseman Colin Walsh at second base, as well as catcher Zach Jones. The three juniors have combined to play in 328 games in their careers. Walsh is the team's returning hitter, batting .320 as a sophomore, while outfielder Kellen Kiilsgaard, hit .313 last year.

On the mound, sophomores LHP Brett Mooneyham and RHP Jordan Pries make up the front-end of the rotation. Mooneyham went 6-3 with a 4.14 ERA, while Pries went 4-4 with a 4.62 ERA. The two freshmen from a year ago combined to make 22 starts.

The team's recruiting class was rated as high as No. 2 nationally by Baseball America and feature shortstop Kenny Diekroeger, outfielder Jake Stewart and pitcher Mark Appel.

In this season's preseason national polls, the Cardinal are ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll and No. 26 in Collegiate Baseball. They are one of four Pac-10 teams ranked in the top-25 to start the year, joining ASU, Oregon State and UCLA.

Mark Marquess is in his 34th year at the helm of his alma mater, having taken the Cardinal to two national titles, five championship games, 14 College World Series and 24 NCAA Regionals.

The collegiate season opens February 19 with a three-game series with top-five Rice at Sunken Diamond. Home series also include: UC Santa Barbara (Mar. 5-7), Pepperdine (Mar. 19-21), USC (Mar. 26-28), Oregon (Apr. 9-11), Cal (Apr. 23-25), Washington State (May 14-16) and Arizona State (May 27-29).
