Feb. 2, 2010
STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford Olympian and 19-time All-American Julia Smit (Mt. Sinai, NY) was named collegeswimming.com's national swimmer of the week following a five-win individual performance in Southern California this past weekend.
The Cardinal, who remained undefeated at 8-0 on the dual season, won at UCLA and at No. 9-ranked USC this past week. Stanford is ranked No. 4 nationally, having knocked off three top-10 opponents this season (Florida, Arizona and USC).
Against the Bruins, Smit won the 100 and 200 freestyles, as well as the 200 breaststroke, while against the Women of Troy, the senior posted top times in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley. She also led off the meet at USC by touching the wall first as the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay.
Smit leads the nation in the 200 IM (1:55.45) and 400 IM (4:03.31) and is second nationally in the 50 freestyle (22.35) and 200 backstroke (1:52.83)
This is the second national weekly honor for Smit this season, as she also garnered the award in November following the team's performance at the Toshiba Cup.
