Feb. 3, 2010
THIS WEEK: USC remains the No. 1 team in the country as the Trojans hoist a 5-0 record into their next dual match at Marks Stadium. Coming to Troy on Friday (Feb. 5) is No. 60 San Diego, which is under the guidance of former USC assistant coach Brett Masi. Masi is in his first season as head coach of the Toreros, who face off against top-ranked USC at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in dual-match action.
ITA RANKING UPDATES: The latest ITA national team rankings (release Jan. 26) have the defending NCAA champ USC ranked No. 1. The latest individual rankings were released Jan. 5. There, #1 Steve Johnson leads the Trojans, with five other teammates settled in the rankings. #14 Robert Farah and #47 Matt Kecki open up the year in the top-50, followed by #67 JT Sundling, #78 Daniel Nguyen and #116 Jaak Poldma. In doubles, Farah/Johnson rank #13 in the nation.
RECENT ACTION: USC had a busy stretch last week with three matches in four days. The Trojans began with a run through the ITA Kick-off Weekend to qualify for the coming ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Virginia. The Trojans first topped #49 Vanderbilt 4-1 to move into the next day's championship match against #73 Yale, which beat Radford 4-3 in the first match of ITA Kick-off play at Marks Stadium. USC then rolled out to a 7-0 sweep of Yale in the final to clinch the Trojans' place at the ITA Indoor competition to come. USC's top guns Steve Johnson and Robert Farah both snagged three singles wins during that stretch to help power the Trojans to victory and improve their own holds on high rankings in the nation.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO: The No. 60 Toreros are 2-0 overall after a 6-1 win over UC Riverside and a 7-0 sweep of UC San Diego last week. USC is 29-3 all-time against San Diego after a 6-1 win over the Toreros last season. San Diego's last win over USC was in 2006 in a 4-3 decision.
