Feb. 4, 2010

TEMPE – Alex Hartig (Great Bend, Kan.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Arizona State University where she will continue her education and athletic career with the Sun Devil track & field program, ASU Assistant Coach David Dumble announced today. Set to graduate from Great Bend High School this spring, Hartig will enroll at ASU in the fall before competing in the throws for the Sun Devils in the 2011 season.

“We are tremendously excited about signing another talented thrower in Alex Hartig,” Dumble, the throws coach at ASU, said. “Being a stand-out shot put and discus thrower, as well as an exceptional three sport athlete, shows that she will make a big impact at the next level. Her success in high school, both academically and athletically, make her a great addition to an already outstanding recruiting class. We look forward to her joining us in the fall.”

“I feel that Arizona State will be a great fit for me,” Hartig said. “The opportunities available both academically and athletically are second to none. By attending ASU, I will be in an environment that fosters success and achievement in the classroom and on the track.”

Hartig enters her final year of high school competition as one of the top throwers in the state as she has captured five state titles at the Kansas state championships, including each of the last three titles in the shot put and the last two discus crowns. As a freshman, she won the shot put (45-01.50) before doubling successfully in the two throws as a sophomore (42-11.00 & 142-9) and junior (43-04.75 & 146-2). Her winning mark of 146-2 in the discus as a junior stood among the Top 30 nationally and ranks as the 10th-best mark returning this season. She also has competed in the javelin at the state meet, taking fourth last year.

A highly decorated and all-around athlete, Hartig not only is a standout in the field, but also excels for the volleyball and basketball squads at GBHS. In basketball this year, she was selected as a preseason first-team all-state selection and has earned all-league honors in each of her first three seasons. In volleyball, she ranks among the school’s all-time best in all major stastical categories and also was selected for several conference and state honors. Academically, Hartig ranks among the best in her class as well.
