Feb. 8, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - On Saturday, when the Oregon State women's basketball team plays host to Arizona in a Pacific-10 Conference game. At the same time, the Beavers and their fans will be participating in a 'Pink Zone' event to help bring awareness to the issue of breast cancer in the process of finding a cure.
The game is slated for a 7 p.m. PT start at legendary Gill Coliseum and wraps up a weekend of Pacific-10 Conference play for the Beavers as they also host Arizona State Thursday night.
It is the third consecutive year the Beavers will participate in the event and it is in conjunction with the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
'We are very committed to being part of the WBCA's `Pink Zone' with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to do our part to get rid of this devastating disease,' Oregon State head coach LaVonda Wagner said. 'It's really important for people to show up at the game and show support and show solidarity not only to support our team but to support our cause. We'd like to thank the community for doing that.'
Buy a specially designed OS pink pin for $5 from Beaver Authentics and receive $2 admission to the game. Beaver Authentics is also selling a pink mini basketball. A portion of the proceeds from the pin and mini basketball will go to Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and the Corvallis Clinic's Project H.E.R.
Project H.E.R. is a comprehensive breast health services program available to women in Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties. The program provides awareness, education and support for all women, from the time of a breast cancer diagnosis through survivorship. The Project H.E.R. team consists of a nurse navigator, a clinical social worker, MammaCare Specialists and many volunteers who are breast cancer survivors.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game to help bring awareness to the need to find a cure for breast cancer. The first 100 fans through the doors at Gill Coliseum will receive a free pink mini-basketball and fans will receive pink pompoms, while supplies last.
Oregon State, is one of the more than 1,000 schools nationally that is holding this special night in conjunction with the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which was launched to raise money for the fight against cancer. Yow, the former head coach at North Carolina State, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009 after battling it for a third time. Wagner is on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Executive Board, serving on the board of directors as a Division I/At-Large representative.
It is the third consecutive year the Beavers have held an event sponsored by the WBCA. In 2008, it was deemed a 'Think Pink' game, and for the 2009 season, the WBCA formally named the event 'Pink Zone.'
Before the game, members of The Rebounders are hosting their second annual Pink Zone Pre-Game Event & Silent Auction. Featured speakers include head coach LaVonda Wagner and Tara Rodden Robinson, PhD. Robinson is the host and facilitator of two popular productivity podcasts, the GTD Virtual Study Group and @Context.
All proceeds from the silent auction and the dinner will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The event runs from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Loge at Reser Stadium. For more information on it, visit http://www.thereboundersinc.com.
