Cougars Fall to Golden Bears

Feb. 12, 2010

The Washington State University women's basketball team put together a late charge, but its comeback bid was halted and the Cougars fell 62-44 to California Friday night at Friel Court in Pullman, Wash.

Sophomore guard Jazmine Perkins (13) and KiKi Moore (10) each scored in double figures for the Cougars, and freshman center Carly Noyes pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. WSU fell to 6-17 on the season and 1-11 in the Pacific-10 Conference, and the Golden Bears improved to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

'I think the loss was a result of two things - their defense and us not taking care of the ball,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'We showed a will to win, cutting their lead to eight. We just need to move on and prepare for Stanford.'

The Cougars scored first, but California went on a 9-2 run to jump out to an early lead. California's Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 13 first-half points, helping the Golden Bears extend their lead to as many as 16 (32-16) in the opening period. Perkins hit a 3-pointer - one of three on the game for the native of Berkeley, Calif. - to close the gap before halftime, but the Cougars went into intermission down 32-13.

California extended its lead to 21 (44-23) with 13-minutes, 49-seconds remaining in the second half. The Cougars chipped away at their deficit over the next nine-plus minutes, putting together a 21-8 run and cutting the Golden Bears' lead to eight (52-44) with 4:07 remaining. That was as close as WSU was able to get however, as the home team was held scoreless the rest of the way.

Noyes' four blocked shots tied her season high, which also ties for the most by a Cougar freshman in NCAA history. Noyes, who entered tonight's game tied for second in the Pac-10 in blocks (1.8 per game), now has 43 in her debut season, third-most by a Cougar -freshman, sophomore, junior or senior - in NCAA history.

Prekins, Moore and sophomore guard April Cook each recorded three steals, and Moore also led the Cougars with three assists.

The Cougars close out this weekend's action against Stanford Sunday in the team's Pink Zone game. Tip-off is scheduled for noon at Friel Court, and fans wearing pink will receive $2 admission.
