No. 14 Wrestling Falls to No. 12 Boise State in Final Pac-10 Dual
Feb. 12, 2010
Boise, Idaho – Ninth-ranked junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) improved to 11 straight with a close 3-1 win over No. 16 Nate Lee at 174 pounds, but the No. 14 Oregon State wrestling team fell to No. 12 Boise State, 21-12, on Friday evening in front of a crowd of 3,482 in Taco Bell Arena.
After falling behind in the first pair of matches, 9-0, Oregon State rebounded with back-to-back wins by redshirt sophomore No. 15 Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) at 125 pounds with a 3-1 overtime decision over Alan Bartelli, and sophomore No. 16 Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) at 133 pounds with a 13-7 decision over Benjamin DeMuelle.
Still holding a three-point advantage, Boise State added nine more in the 141 through 157 pound matches before senior Dan Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.) earned his seventh straight victory in a 13-9 decision over Michael Cuthbertson at 165 pounds.
After a scoreless first period, Lee scored first with an escape in the second period, but a takedown followed by an escape in the third period secured the win for Covington, who avenged a 6-2 loss from the last time the two teams met.
But that would be the last win for the Beavers of the night as the Broncos took the 184 pound match to secure wins in six of the 10 bouts.
Oregon State falls to 18-2, 6-2 Pac-10, snapping an 17-meet winning streak, the longest since 1984. Boise State improves to 14-3, 7-0 Pac-10.
Oregon State finishes the regular season at No. 8 Oklahoma on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. PT.
