Stanford Advances To Paradise Softball Classic Championship Game

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Stanford softball team (4-0) defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi (1-3), 5-2, to advance to the championship game of the Paradise Softball Classic at 4 p.m. HT. Freshman Jenna Rich hit back-to-back home runs in consecutive at-bats to lead the Cardinal in the win.
Freshman Teagan Gerhart earned the start in the circle, striking out five batters to improve to 2-0 on the year. Rich led the team offensively with three hits and three RBI. Senior catcher Rosey Neill added two hits and two RBI for the Cardinal.
Stanford opened the game with two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Ashley Hansen walked in her first at-bat, which brought up Rich. On the first pitch, the rookie hit her first career home run over the left centerfield fence, to give the Cardinal the early lead.
Both teams failed to score in the second inning. In the top of the third, the Islanders cut the lead to one as left fielder Hannah Schwarz singled to left field, scoring Margo Hurdt. Hurdt led off in the inning and reached on a fielding error by Rich.
In the bottom of the third, Rich led off and added to the Stanford lead, belting her second home run of the game. Senior Shannon Koplitz drew a walk, setting up Neill. On the first pitch, Neill hit a two-run shot to center field to give Stanford a 5-1 lead. The home run was the first of the year for Neill and the 36th of her career.
The Islanders added one run in the top of the fourth as first baseman Megan McKinney hit a solo home run to center field.
Stanford moves on to play host Hawai'i at 4 p.m. HT in the championship game of the Paradise Softball Classic. The Rainbow Wahine defeated McNeese State, 5-2, in the first game of the day.
