Sixth-Ranked Bruins Rally to Beat #7 Georgia
Feb. 14, 2010
CLERMONT, Fla. - An RBI triple by freshman B.B. Bates in the bottom of the sixth tied the game and the Bruins scored the go-ahead run on a Georgia fielding error, as the sixth-ranked Bruins came back to defeat the seventh-ranked Bulldogs 3-2 on Sunday at Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational.
The Bruins improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-1.
Junior Donna Kerr (2-0) picked up the win, striking out nine and allowing two runs, three hits and three walks in six innings. Senior Megan Langenfeld pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn her first save of the season. The Bruins had half a dozen hits from six different players.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings, and Kerr held the Bulldogs hitless for the first 4 2/3, until Ashley Pauly broke the 0-0 tie with a solo home run down the right-field line.
The Bruins, just like they did twice earlier in the day against Michigan, matched their opponent's score with a run of their own. With one out, sophomore Andrea Harrison singled up the middle and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray. After Langenfeld was hit by a pitch, junior GiOnna DiSalvatore singled up the middle to load the bases. Sophomore Samantha Camuso followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Murray and tie the game at one.
Georgia re-took the lead in the sixth on a two-out, solo homer by Brianna Hesson, but the Bruins again rallied, scoring twice in the sixth. Senior Julie Burney singled to left to start the inning and was pinch-run for by freshman Devon Lindvall. Two outs later, Bates laced a triple to right-center to bring in the tying run. Andrea Harrison then grounded a ball to shortstop, but it went through the legs of Laura Trout, allowing Bates to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead.
Langenfeld closed out the Bulldogs in the seventh, earning the save after striking out the first two hitters and inducing Taylor Schlopy into a groundout to the catcher to end the game.
The Bruins travel to UC Santa Barbara for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
