Stanford's Appel Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Feb. 15, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Helping the #2/2 Stanford Cardinal extend its win streak to 14 games, senior center Jayne Appel was selected Pac-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 9-14, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Jayne Appel (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) averaged 21.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in the road sweep of the Washington schools over the weekend, shooting 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the field while posting a pair of double-doubles. With the double-digit rebounding performances, Appel also moved into second place on the Pac-10’s all-time rebounding list, accumulating 1,180 boards over her career, trailing only former USC great Lisa Leslie (1991-94) who grabbed 1,214 in her career.
Appel led all players with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the 58-36 win over Washington, then followed up with a season-high 25 points to go with 14 boards in the 98-67 triumph at Washington State. Her 25 points came on the strength of a season-high 12 field goals. Appel also combined for three blocks and eight assists over the two games, including handing out six against the Cougars.
It is Appel’s eighth-career Player of the Week recognition, one short of tying the record set by former teammate Candice Wiggins (2005-08), and Stanford’s 74th all-time selection. Two Cardinal have also received the honor this season a combined five times. SO F Nnemkadi Ogwumike has been honored three times, while JR F Kayla Pedersen garnered the award twice.
The Cardinal look to defend its home-court win streak of 42 games, the second-longest active streak in the NCAA, when it hosts Oregon on Feb. 18 and Oregon State on Feb. 20.
Also Nominated: Davellyn Whyte, Arizona; Danielle Orsillo, Arizona State; Alexis Gray-Lawson, California; Taylor Lilley, Oregon; Erica Tukiainen, UCLA; Jazmine Perkins, Washington State.
