#4 UCLA Completes Doubleheader Sweep of UC Santa Barbara
Feb. 17, 2010
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior GiOnna DiSalvatore had a career-high six runs batted in and went 4-for-4, finishing Wednesday's doubleheader 7-for-7, as the fourth-ranked Bruins finished off a doubleheader sweep at UC Santa Barbara with an 11-1, six-inning victory at Campus Diamond.
The Bruins improve to 5-1 with the wins, while the Gauchos fall to 4-3.
DiSalvatore scored three runs in both ends of the twinbill, falling a triple short of the cycle in the nightcap with a single, two doubles and a home run. Freshman B.B. Bates also had two hits for the Bruins, who had 11 as a team.
The Gauchos jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first. With one out, Jessica Ziegler reached on an error by sophomore Aleah Macon and Keilani Jennings walked. Jessica Beristianos then grounded a slow roller to the left of the second-base bag for an infield single and Ziegler came around from second to give UC Santa Barbara a 1-0 lead.
But Macon settled down after Beristianos' single, retiring 17 of the next 18 batters she faced, including the last 10 in a row. Macon allowed no earned runs, two hits and one walk in six innings with nine strikeouts. She struck out the side in the fourth and two apiece in the second and sixth.
The Bruins scored three in the fourth to take the lead. Sophomore Andrea Harrison walked and senior Megan Langenfeld reached first on a sacrifice bunt attempt when UCSB catcher Lainey DePompa's throw to first was high. DiSalvatore then doubled to left-center to plate junior Amy Crawford, who was pinch-running for Harrison, to tie the score at one. Sophomore Samantha Camuso walked to load the bases and senior Julie Burney singled through the left side to score Langenfeld and give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. UCLA continued to move runners station-to-station, as a single up the middle by sophomore Dani Yudin scored DiSalvatore to make it 3-1. However, the Gauchos got out of what could have been a bigger inning for the Bruins with a force out at home and a double play to the end the threat.
UCLA broke it open with four in the fifth. Bates led off with a bunt single and Andrea Harrison was hit by a pitch. Langenfeld then singled to right to bring home Bates to make it 4-1. DiSalvatore followed with a double to left to plate Harrison and Langenfeld to put the Bruins on top 6-1. One out later, Burney brought in DiSalvatore on a sacrifice fly to right to make it 7-1.
The Bruins hit their first home run of the nightcap and fourth of the day with one out in the sixth when junior Katie Schroeder hit her first homer of the season to center. Bates then reached on a bunt single, but was forced at second on a grounder by Andrea Harrison. But Langenfeld walked and DiSalvatore hit the Bruins' second homer of the inning and her first of the season to center to make it 11-1.
The Bruins host the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament this weekend at Easton Stadium. UCLA faces Cal State Northridge (4 p.m.) and Cal Poly (6:30 p.m.) on Friday, UC Davis (4 p.m.) and Cal State Northridge (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday and Portland State (12:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
