Cal Tied for First-Place after Opening Round of John A. Burns Intercollegiate

Feb. 17, 2010

HONOLULU, HI - Cal is tied for first place with SMU after both teams shot 10-under par team scores of 278 on the first day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai'i. Cal's Stephen Hale leads the tournament after shooting a 65 on the first 18 holes at the Leilehua Golf Course on Wednesday. Teammate Eric Mina is one of three players three shots back after opening-round scores of 68.

'We got off to a good start much like we did at the Arizona Intercollegiate a couple of weeks ago,' said Cal head coach Steve Desimone. 'We were saving shots on the green and pounding the par-fives. Anytime you do that, you have a good chance to put up some pretty good scores.'

Hale, who won the tournament as a freshman the last time the Bears played the event in 2008, picked up seven birdies and made par on the other 11 holes.'Stephen has won here before and is comfortable with this course,' said Desimone. 'The weather conditions were tough for everybody today but when you are doing something right when you shoot a 65 and nobody else breaks 68.'

Other Cal golfers to compete were Brandon Hagy (71, -1, 19th-T), Evan Derian (74, +2, 48th-T) and Chad Vivolo (76, +4, 65th-T).

UNLV is in third place one shot off the pace set by Cal and SMU with a nine-under par score of 279. Nevada (281, -7), Texas A&M (285, -3), BYU (286, -2), Fresno State (286, -2) and Arizona (287-1) are the other teams under par.

'We will have to keep doing what we did today and maybe do it a little bit better to stay in the hunt,' said Desimone. 'There are some other excellent teams in this field that are not going to back down and are capable of putting up a lot of red numbers. The weather is supposed to improve over the next couple of days and I expect a shootout. We can't let up.'

The three-day event continues with 18 holes of action Thursday and Friday. Shotgun starts are scheduled each day at 8 a.m. HST/10 a.m. PST.
