Johnson, Lloyd and Murrey Head to National Team Open Tryouts

BERKELEY - The California volleyball team will be represented by senior setter Carli Lloyd, junior outside hitter Tarah Murrey and sophomore opposite hitter Correy Johnson at the U.S. Women's National Team open tryout Feb. 19-21 (Fri.-Sun.) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The largest open tryout in USA Volleyball history will include 47 middle blockers, 41 outside hitters, 41 defensive specialists, 31 setters and 15 opposite hitters for a total of 175 participating athletes. A total of 80 colleges are represented among the tryout participants.
U.S. Women's National Team head coach Hugh McCutcheon will lead the evaluation process for the tryout. Karch Kiraly (U.S. Women's National Team) and Jamie Morrison (U.S. Women's National Team) will also take part in player evaluations. Other tryout volunteer staff include R.J. Abella (Wichita State), Rob Browning (Saint Mary's College), Steve Colpus (Matchpoint VBC), Denise Corlett (Stanford), M.J. Engstrom (Albany), Kevin Hambly (Illinois), Mike Hebert (Minnesota), Jenni Herneisen (Colorado State), Kim Jagd (UCLA), Steve Loeswick (LSU), Matt McShane (Air Force), Jason Reed (Western Michigan), Dave Shondell (Purdue), Reed Sunahara (Cincinnati), Ryan Theis (Ohio), Giuseppe Vinci (BYU), Paula Weishoff (UC Irvine) and Mary Wise (Florida).
As part of the tryout, athletes will compete for spots in the U.S. Women's Volleyball National Team program and the U.S. Women's Senior A2 teams. The U.S. Women's National Team program is open to athletes who have concluded their college eligibility and wish to train full-time. This program begins as early as February 2010, or when an athlete's scholastic or professional club season has concluded. Athletes with remaining collegiate eligibility may still participate in the program beginning in May 2010 or when their scholastic calendar ends.
Athletes in college with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2010 season who are not selected to the USA Women's National Team may be invited to participate in the USA Senior A2 Team. This program is tentatively scheduled to take place in Phoenix from May 24 through June 2. A projected 24 athletes will be invited to participate in the program, which will include training and competition in the Open Division at the 2010 USA Adult Open Championships from May 29-June 1. USA Volleyball considers the event as the National Championship for the sport of volleyball in the United States.
The U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout is the only path for a collegiate volleyball player with remaining eligibility to access the U.S. National Team and have an opportunity to be named to the 2010 FIVB World Championship to be played Oct. 29-Nov. 14.
Last year, Lloyd and Murrey were selected to the USA A2 Blue team and helped lead their squad to the bronze medal at the 2009 USA Adult Open Championship in Minneapolis, Minn. For more information on the tryout and a complete roster of participating players, please visit www.usavolleyball.org.
