Feb. 19, 2010
SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the 2010 National Team Indoor Championships All-Tournament Team on Thursday, Feb. 18, with two players from the California women's tennis team receiving honors. No. 75-ranked junior Mari Andersson shared third court singles honors with Elizabeth Potkin of Duke and teamed with sophomore Jana Juricova to earn top-court honors in doubles. This is Andersson's second selection to the annual all-tournament team. She was also selected for third-court honors in 2009 and was joined by Claire Ilcinkas, who received fourth-court honors.
Andersson extended her singles winning streak to seven straight and served up the clinching point as the Bears defeated No. 9 Georgia Tech in the opening round of play. Andersson took out Viet Ha Ngo, 6-0, 6-3, before turning a 6-4, 6-3 win against No. 41 Andrea Remynse of UCLA and got a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 85 Kate Turvy of Northwestern to run her set streak to 14 straight sets without a loss. Andersson is now 13-6 this year with a 7-0 mark in dual matches.
In doubles matches, Andersson and Juricova maintained their perfect 6-0 record in duals by defeating the Georgia Tech duo of Irina Falconi and Sasha Krupina, 8-5, upsetting UCLA's No. 10-ranked tandem of Remynse and Yasmin Schnack, 8-1, and beating Northwestern's team of Elena Chernyakova and Lauren Lui, 8-4. The duo received the No. 13 ranking in the Feb. 18 ITA doubles poll and are now 16-6 overall this year.
Northwestern's Maria Mosolova was the top singles court selection and received Most Outstanding Player honors. Allie Will of Florida held the No. 2 spot with Lui of Northwestern taking home court-four honors. Sophie Grabinski of North Carolina was selected to the all-tournament team at court five and USC's Christala Andrews received the nod at court six. In doubles, Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston of North Carolina were selected at court two and Northwestern's Samantha Murray and Turvy were at court three.
This is the second annual ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships All-Tournament Team. Voters for the team included the 16 participating head coaches and the ITA National Ranking Committee.
The Bears (6-1, 0-0 Pac-10) will play host to No. 28 Arizona State (3-1, 0-0) in a 1:30 p.m. PT match on Monday, Feb. 22, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The outcome will not count towards conference standings as it is the first of two scheduled dual matches this spring. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
