Trojans Open 2010 Season With 9-4 Win At Cal Poly

Feb. 19, 2010

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Andrew Triggs (Nashville, Tenn.) allowed four runs and struck out seven in seven innings while designated hitter Matthew Foat (Rescue/Sierra College) went 4-for-5 with four RBI Friday as the USC Trojans defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs, 9-4, in the 2010 college baseball season opener.

Joe De Pinto (Sunland/St. Francis HS) went 3-for-4 with two doubles as USC (1-0) improved to 14-4 in its last 18 season openers. Ryan Cabral earned the save for the Trojans after coming into the game in the eighth with the bases loaded and striking out Luke Yoder and getting Adam Melker to fly out.

Cal Poly scored three runs in the first off Triggs. Yoder beat out an infield grounder in the bottom of the first and advanced to second on Melker's groundout. Triggs then hit Bobby Crocker and Matt Jensen to load the bases. Ross Brayton then hit a two-run single to left while DJ Gentile hit an RBI groundout to first. USC took advantage of two key Cal Poly errors with the first coming in the fourth. Ricky Oropesa hit a long fly ball to right that Bobby Crocker misplayed to score De Pinto. Oropesa then scored on Foat's single to right.

After Cal Poly scored a run in the fourth, the Trojans answered with an RBI double from De Pinto and RBI single by Foat in the fifth to tie it at 4-4. Mike O'Neill drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth as USC took the lead. In the seventh with runners at first and second, Melker dropped Matt Hart's fly ball in center to score two more runs. Foat capped the scoring in the eighth with a two-run single to right.

The series continues tomorrow with a 6 p.m. start and concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on

Notes: Five Trojans made their debuts (Foat, Hart, Taylor Wrenn, Jawanza Starling and Alex Glenn) in tonight's game...Wrenn made the start after being in a coma last month after a severe allergic reaction to a medication he was taking while De Pinto started despite an ACL injury in his left knee suffered last summer...Starling (Tallahassee, Fla.) is the first football player to play baseball since Matt Cassel pitched for the Trojans in 2004.
