TUCSON, Ariz.Kyle Simon pitched eight strong innings and allowed just one run as the Arizona baseball team thumped visiting Utah Valley in the opening game of a double header at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Simon scattered five hits over his eight innings of work, tallying seven strikeouts against just one walk. Mark Hawkenson pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Rafael Valenzuela and Joey Rickard sparked the Wildcats’ bats, combining for seven hits and eight RBI in the game. Rickard blasted his first career home run.

The teams began the second game of the doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. A full recap of both games will be posted following the second game.
