Feb. 22, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. -- ARIZONA STATE sophomore second baseman Zack MacPhee has been named the Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and ARIZONA freshman right-handed pitcher Kurt Heyer has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 15-21, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
MacPhee of Phoenix, Ariz., was an offensive machine during the opening weekend for the Sun Devils, helping ASU to a three-game sweep of Northern Illinois. MacPhee went 8-for-11 for a .727 batting average and a 1.818 slugging percent. For the weekend, he accumulated 20 total bases, thanks in part to his four triples. He scored seven times and drove in eight runs. He also drew three walks and stole two bases in the series.
This marks the first-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for MacPhee and Arizona State’s Conference leading 91st all-time Player of the Week selection.
Heyer turned in a sensational performance in his collegiate debut, allowing just one run in Arizona’s 8-1 victory over Utah Valley on Feb. 19. A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., Heyer struck out 13-of-22 batters faced over six innings of work. He allowed just three hits, walked one batter and retired the side in the third and fifth innings. His 13 strikeouts in a game were the most for a UA pitcher in over two seasons. In earning his first-college win, Heyer helped Arizona wins its 2,500th all-time win as a program.
This is the first-career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week selection for Heyer and the 43rd all-time honoree for Arizona.
