Feb. 22, 2010
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The University of California baseball team (3-0), fresh off of three straight shut out victories over Southern Utah last weekend (14-0, 22-0, 10-0), returns to Evans Diamond for a non-conference game against UC Davis (2-1), Tuesday, Feb. 23 beginning at 1:30 p.m. Last weekend the Aggies won two-of-three games over Utah (won 4-1, lost 7-1, won 6-1) at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.
Starting on the mound for the Golden Bears will be junior right-hander Kevin Miller, who finished 2-3 last season with a 4.50 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 50.0 innings. Miller was a Freshman All-American in 2008 after going 6-1 with a 2.90 ERA, not allowing an earned run in his first 44.0 innings of college ball. Sophomore left-hander Nathan Slater will start on the mound for the Aggies.
Cal was dominating, both offensively and defensively, last weekend against the Thunderbirds, outscoring Southern Utah, 46-0, with a .449 team batting average (57-for-127), including 19 doubles, two triples and three home runs. On the mound, Golden Bear pitchers had 30 strikeouts and only three walks while limiting Southern Utah to 22 hits in 27 innings.
On Feb. 19, freshman designated hitter Devin Rodriguez had a huge day at the plate in his college debut, going 3-for-4 with a grand slam and an RBI double. Rodriguez, from Newhall, Calif., got a single in his first collegiate at-bat in the second inning, and then helped propel the Bears' eight-run third inning with a bases loaded shot over the left field fence. He ended hitting a double in his third at-bat. Cal also got solid pitching from sophomore right-hander Erik Johnson, who threw 7.0 innings, scattering six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Bears had two great performances on the mound in a doubleheader Feb. 20, first by freshman left-hander Justin Jones (7.0 innings, seven hits, no runs, one walk, nine strikeouts) in his college debut, and then by sophomore right-hander Dixon Anderson in game two (7.0 innings, four hits, no walks, eight strikeouts). Offensively, sophomore outfielder Chad Bunting hit a three-run homer and finished with five RBI in game one; while junior second baseman Brian Guinn, freshman third baseman Tony Renda, sophomore catcher Chadd Krist and Rodriguez all had three hits apiece in game two.
After hosting UC Davis Tuesday, Cal then enters the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament, Feb. 26-28, at Hardt Field in Bakersfield.
