Heyer Collects Two Honors

Feb. 22, 2010

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona freshman pitcher Kurt Heyer collected a pair of honors on Monday following his brilliant debut performance last Friday night when he helped lead Arizona to its 2,500th all-time victory as a program.

Heyer, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon. Earlier in the day, he was tabbed as one of three “Louisville Slugger” National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.

The 6-foot-2 right hander struck out 13 of the 22 batters he faced over six innings of work, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out the first two batters he faced in the game, and then later retired the side in the third and fifth innings. He allowed only one walk.

The 13 strikeouts recorded by Heyer rank tied for the second-most by an Arizona freshman in a single game. Previously, Tim Schweitzer tallied 16 strikeouts against UCLA in 1991 and Lance Dickson fanned 13 batters in 1988, also against a UCLA club.

Heyer’s pitching performance paced the Wildcat pitching staff to 17 strikeouts, the most for a UA staff in a single game since the Wichita Regional opening game against Oral Roberts in 2007. Heyer’s 13 strikeouts were the most for a UA pitcher in over two seasons, dating back to Preston Guilmet’s masterful 15-strikeout performance against Stanford in 2007.

On the weekend, the Arizona pitching staff struck out 34 Utah Valley hitters and issued just four walks, while the Wildcat defense committed no errors in three games. The Wildcats swept the series by scores of 8-1, 18-1 and 8-7 (10 innings).

The Wildcats (3-0) will host Long Beach State in an early season showdown at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium this weekend. The series opens on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
