CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Washington State University men's golf team is in second place after the first day of the WSU Snowman Getaway. The Cougars posted a 584 (+8) at par-72, 7,334 yard Cattail Course of the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz., and will head into the final round two strokes behind first-place Idaho.

'We played decent as a group and we are in position to have a chance to win, that's all you can ask for,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. 'We just have to play well tomorrow.'

Nick Ellis is leading the way for the WSU squad. The junior out of Wenatchee, Wash., is in a three-way tie for the lead after posting a 3-under par 141. If Ellis were to hang on and win, he would be the fourth Cougar to win a tournament this year.

While strong winds challenged competitors during the second round, senior Kevin Tucker stayed consistent posting two rounds of 74 (+2), moving up 10 spots during the afternoon round. A top-25 finish would be the sixth of the season for Tucker, and the 22nd of his career.

Trent Sanders and Paul Mitzel are both in the top 25 as well. Sanders opened with a first round of 73 (+1) and finished the day in 18th at 149 (+5). Mitzel is on track for his best finish of the season, heading into the final round in 24th after carding a two-round total of 151.

The final member of the five-man team was senior Austin Hurt who came on strong during the second round to post a counting score for the Cougars (76). The Bainbridge Island, Wash., native will tee off tomorrow in a tie for 39th.

Williams also decided to take four members of the team to play as individuals. Redshirt sophomore Robert Murray and senior Nick Grigsby led the group by finishing the first day in 31st and 33rd respectively. Murray posted a two-round total of 153 (+9) while Grigsby came on strong during the afternoon round to finish with a 154.

John Moon and Hank Frame rounded out the Cougar contingent, carding a 158 and 161 respectively.

The tournament will resume tomorrow, Feb. 23, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Check for final results.
