Stanford's Appel Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the Second-Consecutive Week

Feb. 22, 2010

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- For the second-consecutive week, senior center Jayne Appel was selected Pac-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 15-21, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. She ties the Pac-10 record with nine-career selections.

Jayne Appel (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) averaged 19.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in helping the second-ranked Cardinal clinch at least a share of a 10th-straight Pac-10 regular-season title. She reached yet another significant career milestone, netting her 2,000th-career point to become only the sixth Stanford player to reach the threshold and the 12th Pac-10 player all-time. Combined with her 1,000-plus boards, she joins former Cardinal Nicole Powell (2001-04) and Val Whiting (1989-93) as the only players in the history of the program to reach 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Appel is also the seventh player in Pac-10 history to join the 2,000-point, 1,000-rebound club. She also needs just 12 rebounds to tie the Conference’s all-time rebounding record currently held by former USC great Lisa Leslie (1991-94) who grabbed 1,214 over her career as a Trojan.

Appel posted her 12th and 13th double-doubles of the season, starting with a 26-point (11-for-18), 12-rebound effort in the 104-60 rout of Oregon. She followed up with 12 points (6-for-10), including the 2,000th of her career, and 10 boards in the 82-48 victory over Oregon State, which clinched the Conference crown. Appel also averaged 3.0 assists per game over the two games and shot 60.7 percent from the floor. Appel had five blocks in the win over the Beavers.

Appel’s ninth-career Player of the Week nod ties the Conference record set by former teammate Candice Wiggins (2005-08). It marks Stanford’s 75th all-time selection. Cardinal players have combined to receive the honor seven times in 2009-10. SO F Nnemkadi Ogwumike has been honored three times, while JR F Kayla Pedersen and Appel have garnered the award twice.

The Cardinal can claim the Pac-10 regular-season crown outright this weekend. Stanford heads to Arizona State on Thursday, Feb. 25 for a nationally televised contest on Fox Sports Net. It closes out the weekend at Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Also Nominated: Becca Tobin, Arizona State; DeNesha Stallworth, California; Haiden Palmer, Oregon State; Jasmine Dixon, UCLA; KiKi Moore , Washington State.
