Feb. 23, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Brett Williams (Laguna Niguel/Orange Coast College) struck out Shon Roe with the tying run at third in the top of the ninth Tuesday to preserve the 6-5 win for the USC Trojans over the Loyola Marymount Lions. Williams, who pitched at LMU in 2008, faced his only batter of the night to earn the save.
USC (3-1) broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth with three runs before LMU (0-5) scored two in the ninth with a late rally as the Lions played its fifth straight game in as many days.
Sophomore Ben Mount (Coto de Caza/Tesoro HS) performed well in his first collegiate start for the Trojans, going six innings and allowed just one earned run on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts. His counterpart John Lally threw six innings as well for the Lions, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Lions scored first in the second after Matt Lowenstein reached on a catcher's interference charged to USC's Richard Stock. After being sacrificed to second, Lowenstein attempted to steal third and scored as Stock's throw bounced into left field. USC took the lead in the third when senior center fielder Mike O'Neill blasted a two-run shot to right, his first of the year.
Both teams traded a run in the fifth with Loyola Marymount tying it in the eighth on Roe's RBI single. In the bottom half of the eighth, Matt Foat led off with a walk off Jason Wheeler and Ricky Oropesa reached when he was hit by the pitch. Matt Hart then laid a bunt down in front of the mount with reliever Chris Eusebio trying to throw to third, but pinch runner Jawanza Starling beat the throw. With the bases loaded, Alex Sherrod lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the 4-3 Trojan lead. Cade Kreuter and Stock recorded back-to-back singles for the three-run lead.
With Shuhei Fujiya (2-0) already in the game, he allowed a leadoff single by Ryan Hawthorne, but retired the next two batters. Fujiya hit Colton Plaia with a pitch and Jason Barmasse singled to right to load the bases. Jonathan Johnson then hit a hard two-run single to right to put runners at first and third before Williams came in to halt the rally.
USC hosts Rikkyo University (Japan) in an exhibition tomorrow night at 6 p.m. before playing in the Dodgertown Classic this weekend.
