Third-Ranked Bruins Hold On To Beat Cal State Fullerton

LOS ANGELES - Senior Julie Burney went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and freshman B.B. Bates went 2-for-3 with her first collegiate home run, as the third-ranked Bruins defeated Cal State Fullerton 9-6 on Wednesday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins improve to 11-1 with their ninth straight victory, while the Titans fall to 2-9.

Sophomore Andrea Harrison also had a multiple-hit game with two singles, as the Bruins had 11 hits as a team.

In the circle, sophomore Aleah Macon (3-0) tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run, two hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Freshman Destiny Rodino pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run, five hits and one walk.

The Titans got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first. K.C. Craddick led off with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Chloe Valenzuela. Two outs later, Valenzuela stole second and moved to third on an error. After Torrie Anderson was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, the Titans pulled off a delayed double steal, as Anderson took off for second and Valenzuela sprinted home with the Titan run.

It was all Bruins after the initial hiccup, as they came back with a pair in the bottom of the first. With one out, junior Monica Harrison was hit by a pitch. One out later, junior GiOnna DiSalvatore reached on an infield single and both runners came home on a double by Burney off the top of the right-field wall to make it 2-1.

UCLA added four more in the second. Sophomore Dani Yudin and freshman Charlotte Dolan started the inning with a walk and a single and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by freshman Devon Lindvall. Bates then hit her first collegiate home run to right to put the Bruins up 5-1. Monica Harrison followed with a walk, Andrea Harrison singled, and one out later, Burney drove in her third run of the game with a single to left to plate sophomore pinch-runner Marti Reed to make it 6-1.

The Bruins tacked on two more in the fifth. Dolan led off the inning with a walk and moved to second one out later on a single to right by Bates. After Reed reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Andrea Harrison singled through the right side to plate Dolan and make it 7-1. Bates would be forced at home on a groundout by DiSalvatore, but Burney knocked in her fourth run of the game with a single to left to bring in Reed and increase the lead to 8-1.

Fullerton got a run back in the top of the sixth on a leadoff homer by Trina Harrison, but UCLA built its lead back up to seven with a run in the bottom half. Yudin walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. One out later, junior Amy Crawford was hit by a pitch and Bates walked to load the bases. Reed then singled to left to score Yudin to make it 9-2, but the Bruins were unable to get the mercy-rule win when Crawford was thrown out at home.

The Titans made things interesting in the seventh. With one out, Ashley Carter reached on an infield single, and one out later, Morgan LeMond reached on an error. After Trina Harrison walked to load the bases, Anderson hit a grand slam to left to cut the deficit to 9-6. Kadie Baldwin followed with a double to right-center and Macon re-entered the game to replace Rodino. Cervantes then reached on an error, but Baldwin rounded third and headed home and was thrown out to end the game.

UCLA travels to the Cathedral City Classic this weekend where it will face three ranked teams. On Friday, the Bruins take on Colorado State (6 p.m.) and #14/#13 Texas (8:30 p.m.).
