Ty Abbott Named ASU Male Athlete of the Week
Feb. 24, 2010
Men's basketball player Ty Abbott has been named ASU's Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 27th. Abbott continued to make his mark, lifting the Sun Devils to a big victory over arch-rival U of A. The win places the Sun Devils a half-game behind Cal for first place in the Pac-10. Abbott put the game on his shoulders as he came through with a big effort which included 28 points, 2 off his career-high. Abbott and the Sun Devils look to continue their rise to capturing their first Pac-10 regular season title in program history as they head to the Bay Area this weekend.
This past weekend, Ty Abbott recorded 28 points and 3 rebounds versus Arizona. At one stretch, Abbott connected on 8 straight hoops. His determination and effort showed, as he could not be stopped and lifted the Sun Devils to one of their most important wins in recent memory. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz. could very well be this year's leader for the Pac-10's Most Improved Player Award. He is averaging 17.8 points and 6.5 boards in the past 12 games and is 46-of-99 (.465) from the three-point stripe in that time. After going 5-8 (.625) from three-point range versus Arizona, Abbott now ranks 8th in the entire country for three-point percentage (.442). The Sun Devils are now 19-8 (9-5 in Pac-10) and a 1/2 game out of first place. ASU is now 36-10 (.782) when Abbott scores in double-digits, including 24-6 (.800) in the past two seasons. This is Ty Abbott's third Athlete of The Week Award on the season.
