Brackets Released for Pac-10 Wrestling Championships at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The brackets for the 2010 Pac-10 Conference Wrestling Championships were released today with Anthony Robles earning the top seed at 125 pounds for the second year in a row to lead the Arizona State University selections at the event set for Friday and Saturday inside the Pavilion in Davis, Calif.
Robles, who is 25-2 on the year and ranked No. 3 in the nation at his weight, will open the tournament against Chris Armendariz of the host UC Davis Aggies. Heavyweight Erik Nye also is highly ranked and enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed where he will meet seventh-seeded Jim Powers (Cal Poly) in the quarterfinals.
Vicente Varela was seeded No. 3 at 149 and will take on No. 6 RJ Pena (Oregon State) while two of his teammates, Ben Ashmore at 133 and Kyle DeBerry at 165, were both seeded fourth. Ashmore will face fifth-seeded Justin Paulsen (Stanford) while DeBerry will take on fifth-seeded Steven Vasquez (CPU).
Two Sun Devils were seeded fifth in their brackets with Te Edwards meeting fourth-seeded Lucas Espericueta (SU) at 157 pounds and Jake Meredith taking on fourth-seeded Ty Vinson (OSU) at 184 pounds. Chris Drouin (141) and Eric Starks (174) are both seeded sixth and will open with third-seeded opponents in Mike Mangrum (OSU) and Ryan DesRoches (CPU), respectively. The final Sun Devil in the tournament is Michael Hawkins, the No. 8 seed at 197 pounds, who will face top-seeded Riley Orozco (UCD) in the quarterfinals.
All wrestlers will be looking to advance to the NCAA Wrestling Championships (March 18-20) in Omaha, Neb., next month with the winners of each of the 10 weight classes in the Pac-10 event making the national field. Based upon qualifying standards used throughout the season, the NCAA also has allocated a number of qualifying positions for the Pac-10 (33 in all) to send others to the national event. The number of qualifiers are: four at 125, four at 133, five at 141, three at 149, three at 157, one at 165, three at 174, two at 184, two at 197 and five at heavyweight. To clarify, there are four qualifiers at 125, meaning the champion, runner-up, third and fourth-place finishers would advance to the national championships from the Pac-10.
