Murray Wins 200m at MPSF Indoor Track Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Washington State junior Marlon Murray won the men's 200m dash Friday, the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.
Murray, from Des Moines, Wash., won the 200m dash with a season-best time of 21.63 seconds. Other Cougs in the race included Greg Hornsby (10th, 22.00), Brett Blanshan (11th, 22.08), Andre Jennings (15th, 22.23).
Cougars finished third and fifth in the women's 20-pound weight throw. Kjirsten Jensen threw the weight 55-feet, 6 1/4 inches (16.92m) for third place and Cassie Whitfield tossed the weight 55-3 3/4 (16.89m) for fifth place. Chelsea VanDeBrake ran a PR time of 17:28.06 for 18th in the women's 5k.
Angela Jensen placed sixth and Jasmine Johnson-McKeown scored in eighth place in the women's pentathlon. Jensen, a junior from Tacoma, tallied a personal-best total of 3,588 points while Johnson-McKeown, a freshman from San Bernardino, Calif., reached a PR total of 3,462 points. Jensen opened with a PR time in the 60m hurdles of 8.52, the fastest time of the 16 competitors. She high jumped 5-3 3/4 (1.62m), equaled her PR in the shot put with a distance of 32-4 1/4 (9.86m), long jumped 16-9 3/4 (5.12m), and ran a PR time in the 800m of 2:29.15. Johnson-McKeown ran the 60m hurdles in 9.51, cleared a PR height of 5-1 1/4 (1.56m) in the high jump, had the top shot put with a distance of 42-6 1/4 (12.96m), long jumped at PR distance of 16-5 1/4 (5.01m), and ran a PR time in the 800m of 2:31.05. UCLA's Ryann Krais won the pentathlon with 4,041 points.
The women's distance medley relay team of Anna Layman, Shawna Fermin, Courtney Zalud and Lisa Egami finished fifth in the time of 11:36.30. The men's distance medley relay team of David Hickerson, Dana Wells, Luke Lemenager and Jono Lafler finished sixth with a time of 9:49.23.
Schauble began with a PR time in the 60m dash of 7.07, long jumped 21-8 1/4 (6.61m), threw shot put 35-6 (10.82m), and cleared 5-9 3/4 (1.77m) in the high jump. Hopkins ran the 60m in a PR time of 7.35, long jumped 22-5 (6.83m), 31-8 3/4 (9.67m), and cleared the high jump bar at 6-1 1/4 (1.86m). Sean Harris ran the 60m dash in 7.43, long jumped 20-5 (6.22m), threw the shot put 40-7 1/2 (12.38m), and high jumped 6-0 (1.83m).
In the qualifying heats contested Friday, Angela Jensen left the heptathlon and ran in the prelims of the women's 60m hurdles with her time of 8.55 moving her into the Saturday final. Freshman Shaquana Logan ran a PR time of 8.76 which was 10th and out of the final. There were no prelims in the men's 60m hurdles with only eight contestants and no Cougars entered.
Murray also advanced to the 60m dash final with his prelim time of 6.85. Hornsby's time of 6.86 just missed the final, Blanshan ran a prelim time of 6.92, and Devin Giles' time was 7.09. Griffey will run in the women's 60m dash final after running a prelim time of 7.48. Other Cougs and their prelim times were Johnson-McKeown (PR 7.64), Robinson (7.71), and Morgan Clem (8.07).
In team scoring, Stanford leads the women's competition with 56 points while the Cougars are fifth with 22 points. After five events in the men's standings, UCLA leads with 30 points and WSU is eighth with 12 points.
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships continue Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.
