Feb. 26, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Dusty Harvard delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 11th inning Friday as the Oklahoma State Cowboys beat the USC Trojans, 6-4, in 11 innings during day one action of the Dodgertown Classic at Dedeaux Field. Oklahoma State pushed across two runs in the inning after USC sent the game into extra innings with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Matt Peck threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Oklahoma State, who was playing in its season opener. Peck allowed just one hit and struck out two to earn the win. Davis Duren, Dean Green and Dane Phillips had two hits each for the Cowboys as starter Tyler Lyons made a strong debut with seven scoreless innings. Lyons scattered five hits and struck out seven against just one walk.

Senior catcher Keith Castillo (Huntington Beach) had three hits for USC (3-2) while Joe De Pinto and Matt Foat had two RBI each in the loss.

Kevin David led off the OSU sixth with a walk and stole second with one away. Mark Ginther singled David to third before Nico Rosthenhausler ripped a two-run double down the left field line as the Cowboys snapped the scoreless tie for the 2-0 lead. Green followed with a two-run double to right center for the three-run lead.

Rosthenhausler walked to lead off the top of the eighth, stealing second and later scoring on Phillips' RBI single to left for the 4-0 lead. The Trojans finally got on the board in the eighth when Matt Foat hammered a two-run homer to left center off reliever Mike Strong for the 4-2 score in favor of the Cowboys.

In the ninth, USC put runners at first and second with no outs. Cade Kreuter dropped a bunt on the third base side, but David came behind the plate and fired a strike to third for the first out. Pinch-hitter Ashton Kent hit a high chopper to third for the second out, but pinch runners Jawanza Starling and Alex Glenn were able to advance to put runners at second and third. De Pinto then delivered with the two-out double to left center, tying the game at 4-4.

Phillips led off the OSU half of the 11th with a single, replaced by pinch runner Carlos Saade, who later stole second. Harvard then singled to center for the go-ahead run with the Cowboys adding an insurance run. Peck then struck out Glenn and Beau Brett before De Pinto lined out to right for the final out of the game.

The Dodgertown Classic continues tomorrow with USC hosting Vanderbilt in a 6:30 p.m. game at Dedeaux Field with Sunday's non-conference game against UCLA, starting at 2 p.m. at Dodger Stadium.

Notes: After compiling 101 errors as a team last season, the Trojans have committed only four errors through five games this season...Oklahoma State closer Randy McCurry, who recorded 10 saves last season, left the game in the eighth after suffering an injury during his warm-up tosses with no news on the extent of the injury.
