Softball Drops Two on First Day of Cathedral City Classic

Cathedral City, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 9 Oklahoma and Fordham on Friday evening to open the team’s play in the Cathedral City Classic on Friday evening. The Beavers fell 6-1 to the Sooners and 3-2 to the Rams.


No. 9 Oklahoma (11-2) 6, Oregon State (4-7) 1


Freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) earned her third multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-3 performance, adding a RBI, but the Oregon State softball team fell 6-1 to No. 9 Oklahoma in the team’s first game of the Cathedral City Classic on Friday evening.


The Sooners scored first on a wild pitch and RBI single by Jessica Shults take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Oregon State answered back with a  single run behind Cavestany’s single up the middle to score sophomore Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.), who led off the inning with a walk.


Oklahoma added another run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to dead center bringing Katie Norris to the plate. Norris singled on a hard hit ball that ricocheted off of sophomore pitcher Paige Hall’s (Portland, Ore.) face, taking Hall out of the game after 4.2 innings of work.


The Beavers got at least one runner in scoring position in four innings but were unable to score again as the game closed in favor of the Sooners


Hall was charged with the loss, making her record 3-7. Oklahoma’s Kirsten Allen earned the win after throwing three innings, improving to 4-0.

Sophomore Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.) went 2-for-3 to lead the Beavers, but five errors plagued the team as it fell 3-2 to Fordham on Friday evening.


Fordham put a run on the board in the first on a RBI double by Beckah Wiggins. Senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) tied the game up by herself in the bottom of the second with a long shot over left center to tie the game at 1-1 on the first pitch seen.


The Beavers took the 2-1 lead on a throwing error by shortstop Samatha Pellechio to score freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.), who reached on an error by second baseman Beckah Wiggins. But the Rams tied the game up in the top of the fifth on a controversial call on a ground ball that rolled down the right field line and into the corner of the field, resulting in a RBI triple by Jocelyn Dearborn.


Fordham regained the lead in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Meghan Shager to score the go-ahead run after the inning should have been over two batters earlier but a pair of Oregon State infield errors kept the Rams alive.


Senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) threw the complete game with only one earned run, fanning five, but was charged with the loss, making her record 1-1. Rams’ pitcher Jen Mineau earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the season.
