Feb. 26, 2010
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Sophomore Samantha Camuso and freshman B.B. Bates each homered and had two hits, while sophomore Aleah Macon struck out eight in a complete-game victory, as the third-ranked Bruins defeated Colorado State 4-3 on Friday at the Cathedral City Classic.
The Bruins (12-1) play 13th-ranked Texas in their second game of the evening at 8:30 p.m.
Senior Megan Langenfeld also had two hits for the Bruins, who had nine as a team.
Macon (4-0) gave up three runs (one earned), six hits and two walks. She struck out two in the third and the seventh.
Colorado State (5-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Caitlan Stem singled up the middle to start the game and moved to second on a passed ball. Christine Thomsen then singled down the left-field line to plate Stem and put the Rams on the board. Macon settled down after the Thomsen single, retiring the next 11 in a row.
The Bruins tied it up on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth as Camuso hit her fifth home run of the season to right to make it 1-1. Senior Kaila Shull followed with a walk, and after freshman Devon Lindvall sacrificed her to second, Bates launched her second homer of the year to left-center to put the Bruins on top 3-1.
The Rams rallied to tie the game at three in the top of the fifth. Ashley Munoz led off with a walk and was pinch-run for by Amilia Stephens. One out later, Brianna Donahue reached on an infield single and Ivory Allen walked to load the bases. Stem then singled up the middle to plate Stephens and cut the deficit to 3-2. Macon induced Jenna Krogh into a comebacker to retire Donahue at the plate, but Thomsen reached on an infield error to score Allen and even the score at three.
UCLA re-took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Junior GiOnna DiSalvatore walked to open the inning, and one out later, advanced to third on a double to right-center by Camuso. After Shull walked to load the bases, sophomore Dani Yudin grounded out to first but was able to drive in DiSalvatore with the go-ahead run.
