WSU Baseball Rallies Past Texas Tech
Feb. 26, 2010
LUBBOCK, Texas - Washington State scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to post a 6-3 come-from-behind victory over tournament-host Texas Tech in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field, Friday.
The win gave the Cougars (4-0) a 2-0 record in the tournament after WSU knocked off Bethune-Cookman 10-4 earlier in the day.
'We struggled offensively in some key situations early, but we stuck with the game plan and battled back late.' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'For us to be successful, we are going to have to come from behind at times and play well in tight games. We did that today.'
Trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, Matt Argyropoulos drew a walk to open the frame off Texas Tech (5-1) starter Bobby Doran and ended the right-hander's outing. Jay Johnson (0-1) came on in relief and hit Ryan Peterson before giving up a bunt single to Patrick Claussen that loaded the bases.
Pinch hitter Matt Fanelli drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly. Shea Vucinich followed with a RBI-double to give the Cougars the lead and Cody Bartlett capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle.
WSU starter Chad Arnold pitched six innings, gave up three runs and struck out six. Paris Shewey (1-0) worked the seventh and earned the win. Seth Harvey struck out Michael Reed with two runners on to end the eighth and Adam Conley worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
The Cougars spotted the Red Raiders two runs in the second inning before tying the game with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. In the fifth, Jay Ponciano led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out by Derek Jones, and scored on an infield single by Argyropoulos. Vucinich tied the game in the sixth with a home run over the left-center field wall, his second of the season. Texas Tech took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, run scoring-single by Bonham Hough.
