Feb. 27, 2010
LUBBOCK, Texas - Derek Jones belted two home runs to lead Washington State past Bethune-Cookman 6-3 in nonconference baseball at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field, Saturday.
With the win, Washington State (5-0) is off to its best start since 1993 when it also won its first-five games. James Wise (1-0) gave up three runs in five innings to earn the win for the Cougars. Rayan Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss for Bethune-Cookman (1-6).
'James Wise gave us a good start and our bullpen was huge today led by Richie Ochoa,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'It was good to see Derek Jones show the ability to hit the ball out to two different parts of the ballpark.'
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, RBI-double by Matt Argyropoulos. After the Wildcats scored twice in the third, Jones answered with a home run over the wall in right-center field in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 2-2.
Bethune-Cookman regained the lead with a run in the fourth, but the Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Peterson singled, moved to third on a pair of ground outs, and scored on a wild pitch. Shea Vucinich drew a walk in a 10-pitch battle with Gonzalez and raced around to score on a double by Cody Bartlett that gave WSU a 4-3 advantage.
After Wise departed, Ochoa pitched two shutout innings and Seth Harvey blanked the Wildcats in the eighth to preserve the one-run lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Jones led off with a homer to left-center field. Argyropoulos walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error. Adam Conley worked a perfect ninth for his second save in two days.
WSU will play Texas Tech, Sunday at 10 a.m. to close out the tournament.
James Wise made his season debut on the mound and earned the win as a starter...Richie Ochoa struck out two in his collegiate-debut...Brady Steiger made his first-career start (designated hitter)...WSU has been hit by a pitch 15 times this season.
