Fresno State Comes Back, Holds Off UW, 11-10
Feb. 27, 2010
SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team got three RBI each from Pierce Rankin and Bradley Boyer to build a five-run lead, but Fresno State stormed back with a seven-run eighth inning to beat the Huskies, 11-10, Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Bulldogs (4-2) evened the series with the victory after the Huskies (3-2) won the opener, 10-9, Friday night.
Washington took a 9-4 lead into the eighth inning, but after having scored four runs to get within a run, center fielder Dusty Robinson belted a three-run homer to left-center field to put the Bulldogs in front for the first time.
In the ninth, the Huskies loaded the bases with two outs and a walk to Doug Cherry forced in one run, but Bradley Boyer, who had a ninth-inning game-winner on Friday, flied out to the track in right to end the game.
Boyer went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in. Catcher Pierce Rankin was 2-for-4 and also drove in three.
UW freshman reliever Adam Cimber (1-1) suffered the loss while Fresno State's Gene Escat (1-0) picked up the victory with two innings of relief.
Washington jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman Andy Smith led off with an infield single and, after moving up on a bunt, scored on a single from Rankin. Rankin came in to score on a two-out single from Caleb Brown to give the UW a 2-0 lead.
In the second, shortstop David Bentrott led off with a double and eventually scored on a Boyer sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. In the third, Brown was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Jacob Lamb single, upping the lead to 4-0.
Fresno State, which had leadoff runners erased on double-play groundouts in each of the first three innings, finally broke through in the fourth. After a pair of one-out walks, first baseman Jordan Ribera belted his fifth homer of the young season to cut the Husky advantage to 4-3.
After the homer, two more Bulldogs walked and Fresno State tied the score on a double from Bobby Coyle, though a potential go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate, trying to score from first.
However, the Huskies broke the tie with two more runs in the fourth. After Boyer reached on an error, Troy Scott doubled to put runners at second and third for Rankin, who belted a double to the track in right to put the Huskies back in front by a 6-4 score. After moving to third on a ground ball, Rankin scored on the Bulldog's second error of the inning to increase the lead to 7-4.
Washington stretched the lead to 9-4 in the fifth when Boyer belted a long, two-run homer over the scoreboard in left.
The Huskies and Bulldogs close out their three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
