No. 5 USC Escapes With 4-3 Win Over No. 14 Stanford

Feb. 27, 2010

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 5 USC captured a late doubles point to sneak away with a 4-3 victory over No. 14 Stanford on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Stanford falls to 7-3 on the year while USC improves to 11-1.

Singles was played first due to a threat of rain. However, a 3-3 tie through six matches then required doubles to be contested. Stanford received singles wins from Alex Clayton (6-4, 7-6 at No. 2), Ryan Thacher (6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 4) and Greg Hirshman (6-4, 6-4 at No. 6).

The Cardinal actually led 3-2 with one singles match remaining on court one. But USC's Robert Farah rallied for a 6-7, 7-6, 5-7 victory over Bradley Klahn to force doubles at 3-3.

Stanford's No. 1 team of Klahn and Thacher posted an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot, leaving the Cardinal needing just one more doubles win to clinch the point.

But USC pulled out a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 position to even doubles, and eventually secured the match with a 9-8 (3) triumph on court two.

Stanford is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 3, hosting Utah at 1:30 p.m.
